New housing boosts skills through Kick Start scheme

Bolsover District Council’s ambitious house building programme, Bolsover Homes has already delivered a significant amount of social value.

Contractor, Robert Woodhead Limited have been working to raise aspirations and provide local employment opportunities whilst delivering the homes. In the first 12 months of the partnership, the contractors have worked with 672 local students and provided four work experience placements. Significantly, 5 new jobs have been created and three new Apprentices have started their journey in the construction industry.

To support the delivery of the scheme, Robert Woodhead Limited have also welcomed Jake on a 6 month work placement through the Government backed Kick Start scheme.

Jake, who lives locally in Hodthorpe is even able to bike to work! He is gaining valuable skills as a labourer on site, his main duties include keeping the site tidy and safe. The Kick Start Scheme is a new national programme to support young people into employment. The industry programme aims to give young people skills and experience to help them find full time employment.

“The Kickstart scheme is a great way to help get young people into work. The short term placements mean they are able to ease into work and not be overwhelmed and discouraged. Bolsover District Council is pleased to see how well Jake has done and we hope to see many more successful Kickstart placements in the future.”

During the six-month placement, he’ll get experience of working with various trades and be supported through training and qualifications in asbestos awareness, manual handling, health and safety, working at height and first aid. He’ll also get support with CV writing and interview techniques.
