To mark International Day of Older Persons we are delighted to unveil a film project we have worked on with our partners at Newark and Sherwood Homes and Newark and Sherwood District Council.
The video, titled ‘Celebrating 100 years of Council Housing in Newark and Sherwood’ includes interviews with some of the district’s longest serving council tenants, where they recall some of their earliest memories of council housing and what it means to them.
The video was filmed at Gladstone House on 31st July 2019, the date of the centenary of The Housing and Town Planning Act (more commonly known as the Addison Act), which provided subsidies to support the construction of council housing as we know it today.
Rebecca Rance, Chief Executive of Newark and Sherwood Homes, opens the video and addresses how the demand for council housing has increased and what is needed to meet this demand now and in the future.
Giving his take on what the future of council housing will look like in Newark and Sherwood, Councillor David Lloyd, Leader of Newark and Sherwood District Council, discusses the particular importance of providing homes for the elderly and those with smaller families.
Finally, Jonathan Rees, Project Manager at Woodhead Group concludes the video with a summary of the programme of works Woodhead Group is delivering in partnership with Newark and Sherwood Homes, on behalf of Newark and Sherwood District Council, and gives an analysis of the drawings completed by over 250 school children on what they think council housing of the future will look like!
