Constructing such an impressive building within the heart of Lincoln Castle is bound to attract attention…

Constructing such an impressive building within the heart of Lincoln Castle is bound to attract attention. We were delighted to receive a poem about the Heritage Skills Centre written by Jools O’Neill a local resident and lover of all things Lincoln. We suspect there will be more musings and poetical insights into the project to come, watch this space!

Heritage Skills Centre

Discretely modern, almost hidden away

Not wishing to detract from historic overlay

The Heritage Skills Centre

Teaching and exhibiting traditional skills

Within the walls of Lincoln Castle

At the top of Steep Hill

By no means a minor project

Foundations continually poured all night and all day

Access to such a site, not so easy

Defensive walls and gates obstructed the way

For more than a century, nothing has been built here

Future history is now being made

A roof of grass for insulation

In the grounds of the castle

Modern architecture displayed

Stonemasonry, stained glass and joinery

Within the centre, these skills are on show

Apprentices taught, the public observing

Another impressive attraction where people will go

Steep Hill, Castle Square, the Cathedral

Lincoln Castle with the impressive Crown Court

And now, The Heritage Skills Centre, revealing

Lincoln, still growing, with a medieval heart

Traditional skills retained, taught and employed here

Keep this city and others maintained

Restoring and protecting architecture

For everyone, in preservations name

Jools
